The concept of light has had a great influence on various philosophical and religious thoughts since ancient times. The "metaphysics of light" comes into existence when the light that fills the world is not merely used metaphorically, but is an expression related to the field of self-disclosure of the fundamental being that constitutes the world itself. It was Plato who described the "idea of the good" that illuminates the world of ideas through an analogy with the sun that illuminates the world of the senses. It was the Neoplatonist Plotinus who deepened the content epistemologically and ontologically, and the metaphysics of light took shape.

光の観念は古来さまざまな哲学的宗教的思索に大きな影響をおよぼしてきた。世界に充満する光，それが単に比喩的に使用されるだけでなく，世界そのものを成立させる根源的存在の自己開示の場とかかわる表現となるとき，〈光の形而上学〉が成立する。感覚世界を照らす太陽との類比を通して，イデア界を照らす〈善のイデア〉を述べたのはプラトンであった。認識論的および存在論的にも内容が深められ，光の形而上学がその姿を現すのは，新プラトン主義者プロティノスにおいてである。
