A bay facing the Sea of Japan in central-western Hokkaido. It opens to the north with a coastline of about 80 kilometers from Takashima Cape in Otaru City to Aikappu Cape in Ishikari City. From Otaru City to Mourai in Ishikari City, there is a sandy beach, and from there north, there is a rocky coast with terrace cliffs and mountain spurs approaching the sea. Several rows of beach ridges can be seen inside this sandy beach, indicating the gradual advance of the coastline after the sea level rise during the Jomon period. Ishikari Bay New Port was built near the border between Ishikari City and Otaru City. There are small fishing ports in Takashima, Otaru City, Mourai, and Atsuta Ward in Ishikari City, but the catch is small. The tidal currents in Ishikari Bay are complicated by several eddies, and when small low pressure systems form here, it often causes localized heavy rain in summer and heavy snow on the plains in winter.
