However, the publication of his novel Journal du voleur by Gallimard (1949) and Sartre's Saint Genet, actor and martyr (1952), which was to be the opening volume of the same publisher's Collected Works of Genet, put an end to Genet's work as a novelist. Genet fell into a kind of "blank state" due to Sartre's detailed and extensive analysis in this work, and "was no longer able to write," but as he wrote in his Letter to Jean-Jacques Paubert, written in 1954 on the occasion of the revival of The Maids, he was able to achieve a rebirth as a writer through theater. ...
