A competition held 10 times between 1913 and 1934 under the auspices of the Far Eastern Athletic Association. It can be considered the predecessor of the current Asian Games. From the 5th tournament (1921), it became the first regional tournament officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was started by E. S. Brown, who was dispatched to the Philippines from the American YMCA, and its purpose was to promote sports in the Far Eastern countries, prepare for the Olympic Games, and promote international friendship. The tournament was initially held every two years, but from the 8th tournament (1927), it was held in the middle years of the Olympics, with the Philippines, China, and Japan as the host countries. During the Manila Games in 1934 (Showa 9), there was a fierce conflict between Japan and China over the issue of amending the charter regarding the participation of "Manchukuo", and all the Chinese committee members left the event, leading to the dissolution of the Far Eastern Athletic Association and the Far Eastern Championship Games. Japan and the Philippines established the Oriental Athletic Association, and planned to hold the Oriental Championships in Tokyo in 1938 and in Manila in 1942, but both tournaments were canceled due to the war.
