He is a legendary figure who was born as the son of Finn (or Fingal), an ancient Celtic hero who lived in the Scottish Highlands and Ireland in the 3rd century, and is said to have been a brave warrior who served the court of Tara and composed many epic poems as a rhyming poet. In the 18th century, the Scottish poet MacPherson published three works, "Fragments of Ancient Poems Collected in the Scottish Highlands and Translated from Gaelic" (1760), "Fingal" (1762), and "Temora" (1763), which he claimed to have translated Ossian's poems from Gaelic into prose poetry. In response to the positive reception, he compiled these works into two volumes titled "The Works of Ossian" in 1765.The mysterious romantic atmosphere of the ancient Celtic world was translated not only into England but also into various European languages, and had a great influence on so-called Romantic writers and poets, including Wordsworth, Goethe, Herder, Schiller, and Chateaubriand. However, since its publication, there has been debate as to its authenticity, and the theory that it was a forgery by Macpherson was quite popular, but today, regardless of the theory that it was originally written by Ossian, it is believed to have been created by Macpherson himself, making full use of his knowledge of both English and Gaelic, based on the heroic epic theme handed down among the ancient Celts. In the 20th century, the poet Yeats sang it under the name of Oisin as a symbol of the Irish literary revival.
