The name of the canons in Roman provincial cities. The singular form is decurio. A city council was usually made up of 100 people, and was reorganized every five years during a household census based on wealth (over 100,000 sesterces), age (over 25 years old), status (former city magistrate), and reputation. In an era when autonomous local government was widely recognized, the decuriones held an honorary position. They confirmed the decisions of the civic assembly, advised higher officials, and acted as a criminal court. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
