Zosimos (English spelling)

Zosimos (English spelling)
A Byzantine historian from the late 5th century to the 6th century. Little is known about his life except that he was a high-ranking financial official. It is questionable whether he is the same person as the sophist Ascalon or Zosimus of Gaza. He wrote the Historia nova (6 volumes), covering the period from the Roman Emperor Augustus (reigned 27 BC-14 AD) to Alaric's occupation of Rome (410). Although he lacks descriptions of the period from Emperor Probus (reigned 276-282) to Emperor Diocletian (reigned 284-305), he leaves accurate descriptions of the 4th century, especially the period from 395 to 410, making him an important historical source. He was anti-Christian, and believed that the decline of Rome was the result of ignoring Roman religion, and criticized Constantine I (the Great) and Theodosius I, who officially recognized Christianity, and was sympathetic to the apostate Julian.
