An island group in the south-central Pacific Ocean that belongs to French Polynesia. It consists of the Van Islands, including Tahiti, and the Sault le Van Islands to the northwest. The inhabitants are mainly Polynesian. The area is mountainous and has many volcanic islands. Palm, bananas, and vanilla are produced. S. Wallis arrived in 1767, and J. Cook in 1769. In 1887 the entire area became a French territory. The capital is Papeete. Area is 1,587 km2 .
