Sogdian documents - Sogdian literature

Japanese: ソグド文献 - ソグドぶんけん

Documents written in Sogdian, a medieval Iranian language. They can be broadly divided into religious and secular documents. Of the religious documents, the greatest quantity remaining are Buddhist scriptures. Most of these were discovered in one of the Thousand Buddha Caves at Dunhuang. Meanwhile, Manichean and Christian scriptures have also been discovered in Turfan. Of the secular documents, letters discovered west of Dunhuang are the earliest Sogdian documents, and WB Henning estimates they were written in the early 4th century.

中世イラン語のソグド語で書かれた文献。宗教文献と世俗文献とに大別できる。宗教文献中，残された量において最大のものは仏典類である。そのほとんどは敦煌の千仏洞の一つから発見された。一方，トゥルファン(吐魯番)からはマニ教やキリスト教の経典類も発見されている。世俗文献中，敦煌の西方で発見された書簡類はソグド文献における最も早い時代のもので，ヘニングW.B.Henningはこれを4世紀初頭に書かれたと推定している。
