The Tale of Soga

Japanese: 曾我物語 - そがものがたり

A quasi-military tale from the end of the Kamakura period. A heroic biography. The author and date of its creation are unknown. It consists of 12 or 10 volumes. There are two versions, a manahon (variant Chinese style) and a kana-mixed version, the latter of which is more widely used, but is the original manahon? The manahon is said to have been revised and expanded by a monk from Hakone who later had close ties to Mount Hiei. It begins with the distant cause of the Soga brothers' revenge, and describes the brothers' growth, the difficulties they faced in the revenge, the accomplishment of the revenge, their deaths, and the aftermath. It is a tale of Kanto samurai that was created in response to the Tale of the Heike, under the influence of the Tale of the Heike. It is thought to have been passed down in the Kanto region, partly to appease the brothers' souls. It is heavily influenced by Buddhism and contains many Japanese and Chinese tales. As a compilation of Soga legends, it had a great influence on later literature.

鎌倉時代末頃の準軍記物語。英雄伝記物語。作者，成立年未詳。 12巻，あるいは 10巻。真名本 (変体漢文体) と仮名交り本とがあり，後者が流布するが，原本は真名本か。真名本は，箱根の僧で，のち比叡山に関係深い僧が原作を修訂増補したものかという。曾我兄弟の仇討ちの遠因から起筆，兄弟の成長，仇討ちの苦心，仇討ちの成就，兄弟の死，および後日談を記す。『平家物語』の影響を受け，これに対してつくられた関東武士の物語。兄弟の鎮魂の意もあって，関東で語り伝えられたものらしい。仏教色が濃く和漢の説話を多く収める。曾我伝説の集成として後代文学に大きな影響を与えた。
