A school of painting from the Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. The Muromachi period ink painting school, represented by the legendary painter Soga Jasoku, and the lineage of Soga Chokuan and Nichichokuan from the Momoyama period, who claimed to be its successors, are both called the Soga school, but there is some doubt about the relationship between the two. The former were painters who gathered around Ikkyu Sojun and Shinjuan at Daitokuji Temple, and are known for names such as Hyobu Bokukei, Fusen Sojo, Shosen, and Soyo, and have deep ties to the Echizen Asakura clan. The latter was from the period after the fall of the Asakura clan, but was active mainly in Sakai until the early Edo period. There was also Soga Shohaku in the Edo period, who also claimed to be a descendant of Jasoku, but there is no direct relationship between them.
