The roots contain diterpene alkaloids such as aconitine, mesaconitine, and hypaconitine, which are said to be the most poisonous in the plant kingdom, but some, such as the Japanese laurel tree, are non-toxic. These poisonous components can be detoxified by hydrolysis, so the meat of animals killed by the poison can be eaten. …
