A large urban French residence (illustration). Many were built in Paris as aristocratic residences from the 15th century onwards, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its prototype was the palace for the Cardinal of Ferrara (1546) built by Serlio at Fontainebleau. The basic model of a hotel was a U-shape, with a main building with a courtyard (corps-de-logis), a gate facing the street, and the courtyard surrounded on both sides by transepts or walls. Kitchens and stables were often provided in the transepts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
