This is a statistical classification of various industries into homogeneous groups based on a unified standard in order to accurately grasp a country's industrial structure and its changes, and to make international comparisons. The three categories of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries proposed by C.G. Clark are the most widely used as the roughest classification, and the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities was recommended by the United Nations Statistical Commission for the purpose of international unification of detailed classifications. In Japan, industrial classification was first conducted in the 1930 population census, but today the Japan Standard Industrial Classification, established under the Statistics Act, is determined in accordance with the International Standard Industrial Classification, and in principle, this is used for the display of industries in various statistical surveys. Here, industries are classified into the following 14 major categories, which are further divided into 99 medium categories, 463 minor categories, and 1,324 subcategories. 一国の産業構造やその変化を的確に把握(はあく)し，また国際比較を行うなどのため，統一基準により各種産業を適当な同質的グループに統計的に整理したもの。最も大まかな分類としてはC.G.クラークの唱えた第一次産業，第二次産業，第三次産業の３分類が広く利用されており，細かな分類の国際的統一を目的としては国連統計委員会から〈全経済活動に関する国際標準産業分類〉が勧告の形で出されている。　日本では1930年国勢調査で初めて産業分類を行ったが，今日では統計法に基づいて定められた日本標準産業分類が，国際標準産業分類に準じて決められており，各種統計調査の産業別表示は原則としてこれによっている。ここではまず次の14業種に大分類し，これをさらに99に中分類，463に小分類，1324に細分類している。A農業，B林業，C漁業・水産業，D鉱業，E建設業，F製造業，G電力・ガス・熱供給業，H不動産業，I卸売・小売・飲食業，J金融・保険業，K運輸・通信業，Lサービス業，M公務，N分類不能の産業。
