…the libertine who appears in the epistolary novel Clarissa (1747-48) by the British novelist S. Richardson. Lovelace is the son of an aristocrat and is proud of his family background, but he sets his sights on Clarissa Harlow, a young woman of the upstart middle class, and tries to seduce her.
