Prehistory - Prehistory (English spelling)

Japanese: 先史学 - せんしがく（英語表記）prehistory; Vorgeschichte

It is a discipline that studies the period of human history when no written historical documents were left behind (prehistoric times). It is based on archaeology, which studies ruins and remains left by humans, but it also requires the cooperation of other disciplines such as anthropology, geology, paleontology, and geography. There is a view that prehistory and archaeology are synonymous, but this is because archaeology is the basis of prehistory, and since the historical period is outside the scope of prehistory, the meanings of the two are not necessarily the same.

人間の歴史のうち，文字史料の残されることのなかった時代 (先史時代) を研究する学問をいう。人間の残した遺跡，遺物を研究する考古学がその基礎になっているが，そのほか人類学，地質学，古生物学，地理学などの学問の協力が必要である。先史学と考古学を同義に解する考え方があるが，それは考古学が先史学の基礎になっていることから生れているもので，先史学にとっては，歴史時代のことは研究の範囲外のことになるため，両者の意義は必ずしも同じではない。
