Irabu [town] - Irabu
A former town in Miyako-gun, Okinawa Prefecture. It consists of Irabu Island and Shimoji Island. It is located about 7km west of Miyako Island, has a low-lying terrain and belongs to the subtropics. The village was established in 1308 by people who moved from Hisamatsu on Miyako Island. A 3.5km inlet runs between the two islands, and on the Shimoji-shima side there are five settlements, including Nagahama and Kuninaka, which are mainly involved in sugarcane cultivation, and two settlements, including Maesatozoe, which has Sarahama Fishing Port, a base for southern bonito fishing, at the northeastern tip. Shimoji-shima Airport has a training facility for jet pilots. It is a landing spot for grey-faced buzzards. In October 2005, it merged with Hirara City, Miyako-gun Gusukube Town, Shimoji Town, and Ueno Village to become Miyakojima City. It covers an area of ​​39.20 km2 . Population: 7,012 (2003).
