A former town in Miyako-gun, Okinawa Prefecture. It consists of Irabu Island and Shimoji Island. It is located about 7km west of Miyako Island, has a low-lying terrain and belongs to the subtropics. The village was established in 1308 by people who moved from Hisamatsu on Miyako Island. A 3.5km inlet runs between the two islands, and on the Shimoji-shima side there are five settlements, including Nagahama and Kuninaka, which are mainly involved in sugarcane cultivation, and two settlements, including Maesatozoe, which has Sarahama Fishing Port, a base for southern bonito fishing, at the northeastern tip. Shimoji-shima Airport has a training facility for jet pilots. It is a landing spot for grey-faced buzzards. In October 2005, it merged with Hirara City, Miyako-gun Gusukube Town, Shimoji Town, and Ueno Village to become Miyakojima City. It covers an area of 39.20 km2 . Population: 7,012 (2003). 沖縄県宮古郡の旧町。伊良部島と下地島からなる。宮古島の西方約7kmに位置し,低平な地形で亜熱帯に属する。村落は1308年に宮古本島久松から移住したことに始まる。両島間には約3.5kmの入江水道が走り,下地島側にサトウキビ栽培を主体とする長浜・国仲など5集落があり,北東の突端部には南方カツオ漁業の基地・佐良浜漁港を持つ前里添など2集落がある。下地島空港はジェットパイロットの訓練施設を備える。サシバの飛来地。2005年10月,平良市,宮古郡城辺町,下地町,上野村と合併し市制,宮古島市となる。39.20km2。7012人(2003)。
