Sendai River

Japanese:
Sendai River

It originates on the southern slope of Mt. Shiragadake (1,417 meters) in Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture, passes through Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture, Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and other areas, before flowing into the East China Sea at Kumizaki, Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a first-class river. It is the second largest river in Kyushu, with a length of 137 kilometers and a drainage area of 1,600 square kilometers. Within the drainage basin, there are basins and plains lined up from the upstream, such as Kakuto, Ookuchi, Miyanojo, and Kawauchi. As a result, the river flows down while meandering significantly, and each basin is a frequent flood inundation area. Starting with the great flood of 1906 (Meiji 39), it has suffered disasters here and there since then. To prevent this disaster, Tsuruta Dam was built in 1966 in the narrow area between the Okuchi Basin and the Miyanoshiro Basin, but even this dam, said to be the largest in Western Japan, has not completely prevented the disaster. River traffic used to be carried out, but now it is only used a little for a distance of 12 kilometers downstream from the Satsuma Sendai city center. The river basin is designated as the Kawauchi River Basin Prefectural Natural Park in Kagoshima Prefecture.
