August von Kotzebue

1761‐1819
German playwright. Born in Weimar. Went to Russia and served the Russian Empire from 1781 to 1790. His play Misanthropy and Regret (1789) caused a sensation. After serving as a playwright at the Vienna Court Theater and director of the German Theater in St. Petersburg, he returned to Russia and attacked Goethe and the Romantics. From 1808 to 1813, he took up an anti-Napoleonic campaign in Russia, where he had taken refuge. After returning to Russia in 1817, he reported the situation in Germany to the Russian government as the Tsar's private correspondent. In the magazine Literary Weekly, he ridiculed the liberal and patriotic ideas of the Burschenschaft, and was assassinated by the fanatical student Karl Ludwig Sand (1795-1820), who believed him to be a Russian spy and an enemy of the Burschenschaft.

ドイツの劇作家。ワイマール生れ。ロシアに赴き，1781‐90年同帝国に仕官。戯曲《人間嫌いと後悔》(1789)により反響を呼ぶ。ウィーンの宮廷劇場付作者，ペテルブルグのドイツ劇場支配人をへて帰国し，ゲーテやロマン派を攻撃。1808‐13年には逃亡先ロシアで反ナポレオンの論陣を張った。17年に帰国の後，ツァーリの私的通信員としてドイツ情勢をロシア政府に報告するかたわら，雑誌《文学週報》でブルシェンシャフトの自由主義と愛国思想を揶揄（やゆ）し，彼をロシアのスパイでブルシェンシャフトの敵と思いこんだ狂信的学生ザントKarl Ludwig Sand(1795‐1820)により暗殺された。
