[Died] July 24, 1980. London. British comedian. Real name Richard Henry Sellers. Descendant of Daniel Mendoza, a legendary Jewish boxer active in England in the late 18th century, his father was a vaudeville performer. He aimed to become a professional drummer, but entered the world of comedy after honing his impersonation skills during his military service in the Royal Air Force. From 1951, he appeared on the radio comedy show "The Goon Show" with Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe. After appearing in supporting roles in several films, he came to prominence for his role as a goofy thief in The Ladykillers (1955). He excelled at playing older roles far beyond his actual age and at playing multiple roles by himself. He rose to superstardom with his roles as the incredibly bumbling Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther (1964) and A Shot in the Dark (1964), both directed by Blake Edwards. However, in the same year, he suffered a heart attack that nearly took his life, putting a damper on his success. He finally made a full comeback in the late 1970s with three sequels to the Pink Panther series, featuring Clouseau. In Being There (1979), he received rave reviews for his performance as a good-natured gardener, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. However, he suffered repeated heart attacks after that and died at the age of 54.

Died January 24, 1905. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. American mechanical engineer and manufacturer. Born into a family renowned for science and technology. In 1848, he founded a company that manufactured tools for machine tools and gears. In 1864, he formulated a method for matching the threads of screws and nuts, which eventually became the American standard for threads. In 1868, he founded Edgemoor Iron, which became the world's largest company that supplied and built steel bridges and other large-scale structures. He was responsible for the entire construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York. In 1873, he became president of Midvale Steel, which became a major supplier of metal for cannons and small arms to the U.S. government.

American philosopher. Born in Canada. Became professor at the University of Michigan in 1922. Opposed natural realism and subjectivism, he took the position of critical realism. His main works are Critical Realism (1916) and "Evolutionary Naturalism" (21).
