The study of knowledge and theories about waka poetry. It includes the study of historical facts and verses in waka poetry, commentary on ancient poems, and theories on waka poetry. Its scope ranges from academic research and commentary to literary criticism of waka poetry, and even secret theories and traditions surrounding waka poetry. It has developed in conjunction with the creation of waka poetry. The 1603 edition of the Japanese-Portuguese Dictionary states that it is the study of waka poetry, or the study of waka poetry. Since the Heian period, when waka studies began in earnest, the bearers of waka studies were also poets. In other words, the original meaning of waka studies is the study of how to compose waka poetry. At the end of the Heian period, Fujiwara no Kiyosuke and Akiaki of the Rokujo family wrote books on waka poetry and formed their own waka studies. In the Middle Ages, the descendants of Fujiwara no Teika split into three families, the Nijo family, the Kyogoku family, and the Reizei family, and continued to exist as waka families with their own waka studies, which eventually took over as the court waka studies of the early modern period.

和歌に関する知識や理論の研究のこと。和歌についての故実，歌語の研究や，古歌の訓詁注釈のほか，歌論なども含まれる。学問的な考証・注釈から文芸的な和歌批評，あるいは和歌をめぐる秘説や伝承の類まで，その範囲は和歌の創作活動と結びついて発達した。1603年刊《日葡辞書》には〈歌の学び，すなわち歌を習う〉とある。歌学が本格化した平安時代以来，歌学の担い手とは同時に歌人でもあった。つまり，和歌の作り方を学ぶ学というのが〈歌学〉の本来的な意味であろう。平安末期，六条家の藤原清輔や顕昭が歌学書を著し一家の歌学を形成する。中世には藤原定家の子孫が二条家・京極家・冷泉家の三家に分かれ，それぞれの歌学を擁して歌の家として存続，やがて近世の堂上歌学に引き継がれた。
