Severini, Gino
Born: April 7, 1883 in Cortona
[Died] February 27, 1966. Italian painter in Paris. From 1900 to 1901, he studied under G. Balla in Rome with Boccioni. In 1906, he settled in Paris, and under the influence of Seurat, he turned to pointillism (→ pointillism technique). In 1909, he signed the "Futurist Manifesto." Around 1910, he began to be influenced by Cubism, and this became the basis of his work until around 1921, when he published his book "Du Cubisme au Classicisme" (From Cubism to Classicism). Around 1912, the dynamic expression of Futurism became prominent, and in 1914, abstract compositions first appeared. After producing frescoes near Florence in 1922, he became interested in murals and mosaics, and his style, influenced by Matisse, became more decorative. He won an award at the Rome Quadriennale in 1935 and at the Venice Biennale in 1950. In his later years, he turned to abstract painting. His major works include Dynamic Hieroglyphics of the Tabaran Dance (1912, Museum of Modern Art, New York).
