146‐211 Roman emperor, reigned 193-211. Born in Lepis Magna, North Africa, he was of Phoenician descent and then moved to Rome. He began his civil career as quaestor in 170, then finance director for the province of Baetica, governor of North Africa, tribune, commander of the Syrian legions, governor of Gaul Lugdunensis, governor of Sicily, and finally consul in 190. For the next two years he was given military command of the province of Upper Pannonia, one of the most important military centers of the time.
