Roman emperor, reigned 193-211. Born in Lepis Magna, North Africa, he was of Phoenician descent and then moved to Rome. He began his civil career as quaestor in 170, then finance director for the province of Baetica, governor of North Africa, tribune, commander of the Syrian legions, governor of Gaul Lugdunensis, governor of Sicily, and finally consul in 190. For the next two years he was given military command of the province of Upper Pannonia, one of the most important military centers of the time.

ローマ皇帝。在位193‐211年。北アフリカのレプキス･マグナを生地とする。フェニキア人の家庭に育ち，ローマに渡る。官職経歴は170年に財務官で始まり，バエティカ属州の財政担当者，北アフリカの知事を務めた後，護民官職を歴任，その後，シリア軍団長，ガリア･ルグドゥネンシス知事，シチリア総督を経て，190年には執政官(コンスル)に就任した。それに続く2年間，当時最も重要な軍事的拠点の一つであった上パンノニア属州の軍事指揮権をゆだねられた。
