Around 1485 - 1547
Italian High Renaissance painter. His real name was Sebastiano Luciani. Born in Venice, he trained under Giovanni Bellini, but is thought to have been greatly influenced by Giorgione. After moving to Rome in 1511, he became close friends with Michelangelo, and was deeply devoted to him, while also becoming active as a rival of Raphael. While showing glimpses of the lyricism he had acquired during his time in Venice in his landscape depictions, he also displayed the appeal of the dramatic human expression he had learned from Michelangelo in masterpieces such as The Raising of Lazarus (1517-19).

イタリア盛期ルネサンスの画家。本名ルチアーニSebastiano Luciani。ベネチアに生まれ，ジョバンニ･ベリーニの下で修業をしたが，ジョルジョーネから多大な影響を受けたと思われる。1511年にローマへ移った後は，親密になったミケランジェロに深く傾倒すると同時にラファエロのライバルとして活躍する。ベネチア時代に身につけた抒情性を風景描写等にかいま見せながら，ミケランジェロから学んだ劇的な人物表現の魅力を《ラザロの復活》(1517‐19)等の大作に発揮している。
