A kabuki theater from the Edo period to the early Meiji period. One of the three Edo theaters. It was founded in Kobikicho in 1660 (Manji 3) by Morita Tarobei, but in 1661 (Kanbun 1), Tarobei retired and adopted Bando Matakuro's second son, Matashichi, giving him the name Morita Kan'ya and making him a tayumoto, before handing over the reins of the theater to Matakuro. However, many aspects of the founding process are unclear. In 1668, it merged with the Kawarazakiza and performed, and there were years afterwards when it performed with Bando Matakuro, Kawarazaki Gonnosuke, and the theater was not in a stable form during the Kanbun era (1661-1673).
