A city in southern Texas, USA. It is located about 80 km southeast of Houston on Galveston Island, which was formed by the development of a coastal sandbar, and developed as an important port city overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The city's origins date back to the early 19th century. Its main exports are cotton, grain, and sulfur. Its imports are sugar, tea, and bananas. Since the late 19th century, its status has declined due to the emergence of the Port of Houston and the destruction caused by the hurricane that struck in September 1900. Its main industries are shipping, oil refining, food processing, and tourism. It is the home of the University of Texas Medical School and School of Nursing. Population 59,070 (1990).
