Seiryoki

A military chronicle. It is the biography of Doi Kiyoyoshi, a military commander in the Uwa district of Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture), and volume 7 (Shinmin Kangetsyu) is devoted in particular to agriculture, making it the oldest agricultural book in Japan. The author was thought to be Matsuura Soan, but in recent years it has been discovered to be Doi Saneyoshi (Mizuya). The date of its creation is unclear, but it is believed to have been written between 1629 (Kan'ei 6), when Kiyoyoshi died, and 1654 (Shoo 3), when the author, Doi Mizuya, died. At the time, rural areas were in a state of severe ruin, and there was a strong demand to increase the productivity of farmers. The book is written in the form of a response to a question from a feudal lord about ways to achieve this. The content is very specific, and it provides examples of guidance not only on techniques but also on how to manage a business.

軍記物。伊予国（愛媛県）宇和郡地方の武将土居清良の一代記であるが、その巻7（親民鑑月集）が、とくに農業にあてられており、日本最古の農書とされる。著者は、松浦宗案とされていたが、近年土居真吉(さねよし)（水也）であることがわかった。成立の年代は明らかでないが、清良の死亡した1629年（寛永6）から、著者の土居水也の死亡した1654年（承応3）の間に書かれたものとされる。当時の農村の荒廃は甚だしく、農民の生産性を高めることが強く求められていた。そのための方策を、領主の問いに対して答えた形になっている。その内容はきわめて具体的で、技術だけでなく、経営のあり方についても、実例をもって指導している。
