A river that flows through the northwestern part of the Korean Peninsula and empties into the Yellow Sea (called the West Sea in the Korean Peninsula). It is 212.8 km long and has a drainage area of 9,778 square km. It originates from the southern foot of Mt. Nanrim and flows south-southwest, and its downstream empties into the Yellow Sea, forming the border between South and North Pyongan Provinces. The geology of the drainage basin is dominated by Precambrian gray granite. The topography is rugged in the upper reaches and the broad alluvial Bakcheon Plain in the lower reaches. Within the drainage basin, irrigation water is stored in Anju, Mundeok, Pyeongwon, and Sukcheon, providing water for irrigation to an area of 46,000 square km. It is navigable up to 152 km upstream from the mouth. [Fish pond] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
