[What kind of disease is it?]
This is a disease in which the gonads (testes or ovaries) malfunction.
Both the function of producing gametes (sperm and eggs) and the function of secreting sex hormones are impaired, and the condition is noticed in childhood due to symptoms caused by a deficiency of sex hormones.
Causes can include issues with the gonads themselves (Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, etc.) or a lack of gonadotropic hormones from the pituitary gland (Karlmann syndrome, brain tumors, etc.).
[Symptoms]
In both boys and girls, secondary sexual characteristics are noticed late in appearing. There is no growth spurt, so there is a tendency for children to be short during puberty.
[Treatment]
In boys, male hormone injections (once every 2-4 weeks) are administered, and in girls, oral administration of female hormones is started in small doses and gradually increased. This method allows secondary sexual characteristics (including menstrual bleeding) to develop, and the body to become the same as an adult.
However, in order to regain the ability to have children (fertility), treatment that stimulates the gonads from above, such as injections of gonadotropic hormones, is necessary.

[どんな病気か]
　性腺（せいせん）（精巣（せいそう）または卵巣（らんそう））が機能不全をおこす病気です。
　配偶子（はいぐうし）（精子（せいし）や卵（らん））をつくる機能と性ホルモンを分泌（ぶんぴつ）する機能の両方が障害されますが、小児期には性ホルモンの不足による症状で気づかれます。
　原因は、性腺自体に原因がある場合（ターナー症候群、クラインフェルター症候群など）と、脳下垂体（のうかすいたい）からの性腺刺激ホルモンの不足による場合（カールマン症候群、脳腫瘍（のうしゅよう）など）とがあります。
[症状]
　男女とも、二次性徴（にじせいちょう）がなかなか現われないことで気づきます。成長スパートもおこらないので、思春期に低身長の傾向が現われます。
[治療]
　男子では男性ホルモンの注射（2～4週に1回）を、女子では女性ホルモンの内服を、少量から徐々に増量します。この方法で、二次性徴（月経様性器出血（げっけいようせいきしゅっけつ）を含む）を発来させ、おとなと同じからだつきに完成することができます。
　しかし、子どもをつくる能力（生殖能力）を獲得するためには、性腺刺激ホルモンの注射など、より上位から性腺に刺激を与える治療が必要です。
