The former town area in the southern part of Sakuragawa City, in the central-western part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It stretches from the western slope of the Tsukuba Mountains to the plateau to the west of that. It was incorporated as a town in 1889. In 1954 it merged with the villages of Shio, Tanigai, and Kabaho. In 2005 it merged with Iwase Town and Yamato Village to form Sakuragawa City. The Sakuragawa River flows through the center, with rice fields in the river basin. Makabe, the central settlement, was a castle town in the Middle Ages and is a thriving sake brewing town. Granite quarried from the mountains is exported as stone material and processed into stone lanterns, gravestones, etc. Shio ware, made from clay from the foot of the mountain, is also produced here. The ruins of Makabe Castle are a nationally designated historic site. Part of it belongs to Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park.MakabeSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
