A term proposed by Brown WL Brown et al. (1970) that refers to a substance produced by one species of organism that, when it comes into contact with another species of organism, has a beneficial effect on the organism that comes into contact with it rather than on the organism that produced it. Examples include insect attractants produced by plants, which are important for insect behavior. What are generally called inducers can also be called kairomones. On the other hand, when a substance produced by one species of organism comes into contact with another species of organism, it can cause a physiological or behavioral response in the organism that comes into contact with it, thereby having a beneficial effect on the organism that produced the substance; such substances are called allomones.
