Sexual intercourse - coitus

Sexual intercourse is the act of reproduction, that is, the union of sperm and an egg. In humans, it refers to the insertion of the penis into the vagina and the release of sperm. An erection is necessary to insert the penis into the vagina, and sexual intercourse is impossible without an erection. When the erect penis is inserted into the vagina, the friction between the two enhances sexual sensation, and ejaculation occurs reflexively. To fully complete the entire process of sexual intercourse, the man must have sufficient elements of sexual desire, erection, sexual intercourse, ejaculation, and orgasm. If any of these elements is missing or insufficient, satisfactory sexual intercourse is impossible, and this condition is called sexual dysfunction. For men, many elements must be present to complete sexual intercourse, but for women, sexual intercourse is possible even if not all elements are present. Also, since sexual responses differ slightly between men and women, foreplay and afterplay are necessary to match them. In men, sexual arousal increases suddenly and then suddenly disappears once orgasm is reached, and there is a period of time during which no response is given to any sexual stimulation. In contrast, in women, sexual arousal increases more slowly than in men, and disappears more slowly after orgasm is reached; if appropriate sexual stimulation is applied during this period, it is possible for women to reach orgasm again; in this respect, they are completely different from men.

In this way, it is necessary for couples to understand the differences in sexual responses between men and women and to come up with ways to maximize sexual sensations. Since erogenous zones are completely different for each individual, it is through experience that one learns where the most sensitive spots are. In short, it is essential for couples to create their own individual sex life patterns that are most satisfying for each other.

Furthermore, sexually transmitted diseases, which are contracted through sexual intercourse, have become a major problem both individually and socially, and the importance of sex education, including prevention and birth control, is being emphasized.

性交は生殖、すなわち精子と卵子が結合するために行われる交わりをいうが、ヒトでは陰茎を腟(ちつ)に挿入し精子を放出することをさす。陰茎を腟内に挿入するためには勃起(ぼっき)が必要で、勃起がなければ性交は不可能である。勃起した陰茎が腟の中に挿入され両者の摩擦によって性感が高められ反射的に射精がおこる。このような性行為の全過程を完全に果たすためには、男性側では性欲、勃起、性交、射精、オーガズムのいずれの要素も十分であることが必要で、これらの要素の一つでも欠けるかあるいは不十分だと満足な性行為は不可能であり、このような状態を性機能障害とよんでいる。男性ではこのように多くの要素がそろわなくては性行為の完遂は不可能であるが、女性ではかならずしもすべての要素がそろわなくても性交は可能である。また男性と女性では性反応が多少異なるので、一致させるために前戯や後戯が必要となる。男性では性感は急激に高まり、オーガズムに達すると急激に消退し、しばらくの間どのような性的刺激を加えても反応しない時期があるのに対し、女性では男性に比べて緩やかな性感の高まりを示し、オーガズムに達してのちも消退は緩やかで、この間に適当な性的刺激を加えると、ふたたびオーガズムに達することも可能で、この点が男性とまったく違う点である。

　このように男女の性反応の違いをお互いに知ったうえで、性感がもっとも高まるようなくふうをする必要がある。そもそも性感帯などは個人によってまったく異なるものであるから、どこにもっとも鋭い感覚があるかは経験を通して体得するもので、要するに夫婦でもっとも満足のいく個性的な性生活パターンをお互いにつくりだしていくことが肝要である。

　また、性行為を通じて感染するいわゆる性感染症は個人的にもまた社会的にも大きな問題になってきており、その予防や受胎調節を含めた性教育の重要性が強調されている。
