A wage calculated based on the idea that wages should be at a level that guarantees a certain standard of living for the worker and his/her family. This idea is said to have arisen during the British labor movement in the late 19th century, but its content has changed over time. For example, the market basket method (→quantity method), which was devised by the British Labour government in 1923 based on this idea, initially simply determined the items and quantities of food necessary to maintain a minimum standard of living, calculated the cost of purchasing them, and used this as the basis for wages, but later the scope of expenses was expanded to include all living expenses such as housing and miscellaneous expenses.

賃金は労働者自身とその家族の一定の生活を保障する水準であるべきだという思想に基づいて算定された賃金のこと。この思想は 19世紀末のイギリス労働運動の過程で生れたといわれるが，その内容は時代の変遷とともに変化してきている。たとえばこの思想をもとに 1923年イギリス労働党政権が考案したマーケット・バスケット方式 (→物量方式 ) でも，当初は単に最低の生活水準の維持に必要な食料の品目と数量を定め，それにより購買する費用を算出し，賃金の基準としたが，そののち費目の対象が住居費，雑費などの全生計費目に拡大されるようになった。
