…Wagner has long been of interest to German literature scholars, and in 1896 Mori Ogai and Ueda Bin debated for 10 months in the journal Teikoku Bungaku about whether Wagner's later music was in recitative or not. The efforts of conductor Manfred Gurlitt (1890-1972) are largely responsible for the beginning of Wagner's works being performed as operas.
