Small painted terracotta statues produced in ancient Greece. They range in height from 6-7cm to 25cm, and include graceful women in various poses, as well as gods, knights, musicians, craftsmen, and farmers. They were produced from the 5th century BC until the Hellenistic period. Many of them are said to have been used as burial goods in cemeteries or as offerings to temples, but many were also used as indoor ornaments or as beloved items of the deceased. They were named after the large number of them discovered in the 1870s in a cemetery at Tanagra in Boeotia, but the main production center is thought to have been the kilns in the Attica region.
