Arabesque - Arabesque (English spelling) French

Japanese: アラベスク - あらべすく(英語表記)arabesque フランス語
Arabesque - Arabesque (English spelling) French

The original meaning is "Arabic style," but as an artistic term it refers to the curvilinear decorative patterns that are widely seen in Islamic art. In particular, it often refers to arabesque patterns in which graceful plants such as vines are intertwined, but in a broader sense it also includes complex, connected geometric shapes and stylized Arabic characters. Furthermore, it is not limited to Islamic art, but can refer to all fantastical decorative patterns with many curves, and can also include grotesque patterns that incorporate human figures and birds and animals.

[Shinozuka Fumio]

The word has also been adopted in other artistic genres. In music, it is used as the title of a piece that develops a single musical idea in a fantastical and decorative way. It first appeared in Schumann's piano piece Arabesque in C major (Op. 18), published in 1839. Other examples include Debussy's piano piece Two Arabesques in E major and G minor (1888) and Delius' choral piece Arabesque with orchestral accompaniment (1911). In ballet, the word refers to a pose in which the dancer stands on one foot with one arm forward and the other arm and leg stretched out behind.
