The capital of the province of Cáceres in the Extremadura region in central-western Spain. Population 82,716 (2001). The old town is located on a hill 470 meters above sea level on the south bank of the Tagus River, and is surrounded by Roman walls. Many medieval monasteries and palaces remain, including the Gothic Church of San Mateo (built in the 15th century) and the Casa de las Veletas, which is now a museum. The old town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1986 (World Cultural Heritage). The new town spreads out outside the walls, and the surrounding area produces corn, fruit, wine, and other products.
