Parnassius eversmanni

Parnassius eversmanni
Lepidoptera, Papilionidae. Forewing length 25-30mm. Body is covered with yellow hairs. Wings are translucent with a yellow tinge, forewings are mostly dark, and hindwings usually have two red markings. Larvae feed on the alpine plant Dicentra, and one generation takes two years. Adults appear in June-July. They are distributed in cold regions surrounding the Arctic, and in Japan, the subspecies P. e. daisetsuzana is found only in the alpine zone of Mt. Daisetsu in Hokkaido, but collection is prohibited as a natural monument. The genus Parnassius is represented by the European Apollo butterfly P. apollo , and is the most prized group among butterfly collectors. It lacks a tail on the hindwing and at first glance resembles Aporia of the Pieridae family, but the forewing veins are different and the larvae have a strong-smelling stink horn.
