Born April 30, 1916 in Gaylord, Michigan [Died] February 24, 2001. Medford, Massachusetts. American applied mathematician. Studied electrical engineering and mathematics at the University of Michigan, and electrical circuit theory at the graduate school of MIT. Worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1941 to 1957, and in 1948 published A Mathematical Theory of Communication, co-authored with colleague W. Weaver. In this book, he defined the amount of information using the concept of entropy, building the foundations of modern information theory.
