〘Noun〙 (sponge)① A sponge made by bleaching sea sponges such as the Japanese sponge, which have no bones and whose sponge fibers have a mesh-like structure, leaving only the sponge fibers. It is highly absorbent and is used in bathing. There are also imitations of this made from rubber or synthetic resin. Sea sponge.
