Wali - Wari (English spelling)

An Indian poet. Born in Aurangabad in the Deccan. A representative poet of Deccan Urdu, known as a Dakini (Dakanī), he visited Delhi in 1700 and published poems in Dakini style, which had a strong impact on Delhi poets, who at the time wrote poetry mainly in Persian. As a result, Urdu, which had previously been considered merely the spoken language of the town, began to be used in poetry, and soon Urdu poetry reached its heyday, centered around Delhi. Wali's poems have as their theme the praise of beauty, and are characterized by an overflowing brightness and simple metaphors. Several collections of his poems have been published, including The Complete Poems of Wali (1927).

インドの詩人。デカンのアウランガーバードに生まれる。ダキニー（ダカニー）とよばれるデカン・ウルドゥー語の代表的な詩人で、1700年にデリーを訪問しダキニーによる詩を発表、当時もっぱらペルシア語で詩作をしていたデリーの詩人たちに強い衝撃を与えた。この結果それまで単に市井の話しことばにすぎないと考えられていたウルドゥー語が、詩作に用いられるようになり、やがてデリーを中心にウルドゥー詩の全盛期を迎えることになった。ワリーの詩は美への賞賛を主題とし、全体にみなぎる明るさと、平易な比喩(ひゆ)などを特徴としている。『ワリー詩全集』（1927）など数冊の詩集が出版されている。
