The Poet's Love - Shijin no Koi (English) Dichterliebe

A song cycle (Opus 48) composed by Robert Schumann. The lyrics are taken from the Lyrics Intermezzo (1822-23) in Heine's collection of poems, The Song Book. Written during the so-called "Year of Songs" (1840), when Schumann devoted himself intensively to song, this song cycle is not only the culmination of his creative work, but is also regarded as a representative work of German Romantic song. The cycle consists of 16 songs in total, with songs 1-6 singing of the joys of love, songs 7-14 of the pain of unrequited love, and songs 15-16 of nostalgia for lost youth. Many of the songs are small in scale, following Heine's poems, and the melodies of the songs themselves are by no means elegant, but when accompanied by piano, the subtle emotions of the lyrics come to life beautifully. A good example of this is the first piece, "In a Most Beautiful May," in which the piano creates a background of unstable arpeggios over a simple song melody written in folk-song-like stanzas (each stanza of the poem is sung to the same melody), expressing the heart-wrenching longing for spring. The exquisite harmony between poetry and music in "On a Bright Summer Morning" (piece 12), in which the flowers in the garden speak to the poet, clearly shows that Schumann had stepped into a new and original realm of expression.

ロベルト・シューマン作曲の連作歌曲集（作品48）。歌詞はハイネの詩集『歌の本』にある「叙情的挿曲」Lyrisches Intermezzo（1822～23）から選ばれている。シューマンが集中的に歌曲に取り組んだ、いわゆる「歌の年」（1840）に書かれたこの歌曲集は、彼の創作活動の最高峰をなすばかりでなく、ドイツ・ロマン派歌曲の代表的作品として評価されている。全体は16曲からなり、第1～6曲は愛の喜び、第7～14曲は失恋の痛み、第15、16曲は失われた青春への郷愁を歌う。曲の多くはハイネの詩に従って規模も小さく、歌の旋律もそれ自体としてはけっして流麗とはいえないが、ピアノの伴奏がそこに加わるとき、歌詞の微妙な情感がみごとなまでに息づいてくる。民謡を思わせる有節形式（詩の各節を同一の旋律で歌う）で書かれた素朴な歌の旋律に、ピアノが調性の不安定な分散和音で背景をつくり、春のあこがれの胸苦しさを表現する第1曲「いと美しき五月に」などはそのよい例であろう。そして、庭の花が詩人に語りかける「明るい夏の朝に」（第12曲）における詩と音楽の精妙な一致は、シューマンが独自の新しい表現領域へ足を踏み入れたことを如実に示している。
