Hokuriku Expressway

Japanese:
Hokuriku Expressway

One of the "Seven Roads" since ancient times. It was also called "Hokuroku-do." It is an area along the Sea of Japan stretching from Fukui Prefecture to Niigata Prefecture, and since the early Heian period, the seven provinces of Wakasa, Echizen, Kaga, Noto, Etchu, Echigo, and Sado belonged to this area. The official road from Omi through Echizen, Kaga, and Etchu to Echigo was called the Hokuriku Road. In ancient times, it was called Koshi Province or Koshiji, but during the reign of Emperor Tenmu (672-686) when the Ritsuryo state was established, it was divided into three provinces: Echizen, Etchu, and Echigo. Wakasa Province appears to have been established before the division of the three provinces. Later, in 712 (Wado 5), Dewa separated from Echigo to belong to the Tosan road, and Noto separated from Echizen in 718 (Yoro 2), and Kaga separated in 823 (Kōnin 14), resulting in seven provinces. The Hokuriku road, as an official road, connected Ecchu and Echigo, passing through Arachi no Seki, Tsuruga, Kaeruyama, Echizen Kokufu, Tonamiyama, and other places.
