1886‐1933 Swedish geographer. Son of Gerard Jakob De Geer, famous for his research on glaciers. Based on Richthofen's view of geography as the science of the earth's surface, he defined geography as the science of the distribution of surface phenomena, and argued that regions are determined by systematically synthesizing the relationships between various elements of the earth's surface. He produced many achievements based on precise topographical surveys and quantitative analysis, and brought a breath of fresh air to Swedish geography in the 1920s, which had a tendency toward environmentalism. He began by creating a dot map with 10 people as one point, and then completed a population distribution map for the entire country of Sweden, clarifying the relationship between topography, land use, and population.
