Literature Museum

Japanese: 文学館 - ぶんがくかん

This museum stores and displays various literature-related materials, belongings, and former books. Classical literature has long been collected and preserved in libraries across the country, including university, prefectural, and city libraries, the Imperial Household Agency Archives, Seikado Bunko, and Sonkeikaku Bunko. However, modern literature has been widely scattered and lost due to the Great Kanto Earthquake, war damage, and frequent bans on sale. Apart from the Meiji Newspaper and Magazine Library at the University of Tokyo, there are memorial literary museums for Tokutomi Roka, Shimazaki Toson, Koizumi Yakumo, Higuchi Ichiyo, and Ishikawa Takuboku in the places associated with them. Materials related to proletarian literature in particular were in a dire state.

文学関係の各種資料や遺品，旧蔵書などを収蔵･公開するミュージアム。古典関係の文献は早くから大学･県立･市立図書館はじめ，宮内庁書陵部，静嘉堂文庫，尊経閣文庫など全国各地の文庫に収集保存されてきたが，近代文学は関東大震災や戦災，あるいはしばしば発売禁止にあうなどで散逸がはなはだしく，わずかに東大の明治新聞雑誌文庫のほかは徳冨蘆花，島崎藤村，小泉八雲，樋口一葉，石川啄木らの記念文学館がそれぞれゆかりの地にあった程度で，とくにプロレタリア文学関係資料などは惨憺たる状態だった。
