Florian Witold Znaniecki

American sociologist. Born in Poland. Studied at the universities of Warsaw, Geneva, Zurich, Paris, and Krakow, receiving his doctorate from the University of Krakow in 1909. In 1914, he was invited to the University of Chicago by W. I. Thomas, with whom he wrote the five-volume book The Polish Peasant in Europe and America (1918-1920). In the early 1920s, he returned to Poland and became a professor of sociology at the University of Poznan. In the 1930s, he taught at Columbia University twice, but was unable to return home the second time due to war, so he stayed in the United States and took up a teaching position at the University of Illinois. His collaborative research with Thomas is highly regarded, but he is also known for his humanistic perspective, as seen in his views on cultural data and human coefficients, and his considerations of knowledge, values, and behavior. He initially attempted to examine social systems, the subject of sociology, from four perspectives: social action, social relations, social persons, and social groups, and finally from four perspectives: social relations, social roles, social groups, and society. His works include "Method of Sociology" (1934) and "The Social Role of the Intellectual" (1940).
