The successor to the Kurashiki Institute for Science of Labor, which was established in 1921 (Taisho 10) by Ohara Magosaburo (then president of Kurashiki Spinning). The institute was established with the aim of studying natural sciences such as occupational medicine, and social sciences such as business administration and labor law from a labor perspective. As the organization expanded, it moved to Tokyo as the Japan Institute for Science of Labor in 1962, and was rebuilt after World War II as the Institute for Science of Labor, a foundation. 1921 (大正 10) 年大原孫三郎 (当時倉敷紡績社長) によって設立された倉敷労働科学研究所の後身。労働医学などの自然科学や経営学,労働法学などの社会科学を労働面から研究しようとする目的で設立された研究所。組織の拡充に伴い 37年に日本労働科学研究所として東京に移り,第2次世界大戦後,財団法人労働科学研究所として再建された。
