An annual grass of the grass family native to Egypt and Sudan. It is thought to be a crop that was developed by crossbreeding several wild species from tropical Africa. The plant resembles corn and grows to a height of 1-3 m. The culm is thick but prone to lodging. The nodes are densely hairy. The leaves are 1 m long and 5 cm wide. In temperate regions, cylindrical ears similar to those of cattails appear at the top of the stem from summer to autumn, and are 30-40 cm long, sometimes up to 90 cm, and 2-4 cm in diameter. The caryopsis is slightly smaller than a grain of rice and has a bluish color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
