…(1) Dressage: This is a competition in which the horse must be ridden actively, gracefully, and smoothly by memorizing exercises set in a rectangular arena measuring 60m x 20m. In the West, this is called dressage, which means training in French, and requires high level equestrianism. There are three types of horse gait: the normal walk, the trot, and the canter. Each of these can be further divided into retracted, normal, intermediate, and extended gaits. By combining these, the horse can perform forward, backward, rounding (riding in a circle with a diameter of 6m), snake riding (riding in a snake-like pattern), figure-of-eight riding, sideways, pirouettes (circular movements with a radius equal to the horse's length), passage (a trot in which the stride is very short, extremely retracted, and extremely elastic), and piaffe (a trot performed on the spot). …
