An ancient Greek unit of length, equivalent to 600 Greek shaku (about 185 m). From this, the term came to mean a stadium with a straight track the length of one stadium. A stone starting line and finish line remain, allowing the length to be measured. The actual distance varies considerably, from 178.35 m at Delphi, 184.96 m at Athens, and 191.27 m at Olympia. From the Hellenistic period, horseshoe-shaped stepped seating was built around three sides of the track, and the Athenian stadium could accommodate about 50,000 people.
